What is the Marriage Equality Act?
Garden City LGBT Family Attorney
The Marriage Equality Act was signed into law in New York State in June
2011 and took effect in July 2011. It allows for same-sex marriages but
not does penalize benevolent organizations or religious institutions for
refusing to assist or recognize these unions. Civil claims are not permitted
against such entities where these refusals occur.
Prior to this Act, the state only recognized same-sex marriages legally
performed in other states or countries. Full rights and responsibilities
regarding marriage have now been granted to all couples regardless of
the parties' gender and the Act specifically states there is to be
no difference in the application of law to any married couple.
